Welcome

Live with Nymera

My name is Marc v/d Meulen, a composer, guitar player and violist from the Netherlands. This website is dedicated to my work as a film score composer, session musician and to the original music I create. Whether you've come to find someone to make music for your film, someone to play and record viola for your next album or simply to listen to my music, you've come to the right place!

I make both instrumental music with a lot of viola and vocal music with various vocalists. All my vocal music is released under the project name Compendium, which you can find by going to the dedicated
CompendiuM page.

Please let me help you get to your destination as quickly as possible!

Music

The music I make is inspired mainly by both metal and modern film music. I really love adding a lot of guitar and viola which I record myself, home made synthesizer sounds and my own sound design. The last can range from reversed piano tones to time stretched screaming with a lot of effects to create a sort of surreal ambience.

I make both instrumental music featuring viola and music with vocals in collaboration with various guest vocalists. As I mentioned in the intro I release the vocal music under the name Compendium to avoid confusion, so please go to the
Compendium page to listen to those.

More guitars, more horror and ambience elements and more intuïtive melodies. I've grown even more attached to ambience and horror elements during the period of writing this album.

Film Score Composer

It is always pleasant to work with Marc, He knows how to push a film to the next level with his music. I am surprised everytime when I add his score to project. And besides he is a nice person to work with! If you are looking for a good composer, contact Marc!

Robert Monster of Video Concepts

"Marc's music is both intriguing as well as emotionally provoking. His score for my film "Do Not Open" is what drives the entire mood of the thriller, and I can't visualize the film without Marc's music , or any other music for that matter."

Chris Barcia - Award Winning Director of Dark Mind Productions

"The soundtrack continues to, despite having listened to it countless times, give me goosebumps... which shows a lot of professionalism"

Tom van Immerseel

"Super fast with the delivery, knew exactly what I was looking for in a piece, very kind and understanding, and super easy to work with"

Rosemary Pierce - Sapphire Cuthulu Productions

"In conclusion, Marc's clear passion for scoring and music enabled him to work under considerable pressure yet provide weekly drafts of quality scoring. His attention to what was being asked of him was impressive and even more was his ability to add and adjust his own ideas into the gaps between specified details (which was more than you'd expect) which is a key and quality feature not every composer has."

Elliot Wallis - Head of the TNC Team

"From 2012 Marc v/d Meulen has been the composer for three of my movies, namely Destination reached; Baby Blues and Animaris Annabelis. These played on several amateur film festivals. The music of Marc has been explicitly praised by the jury.

It is pleasant to work with him. I mail the complete film to him with suggestions where music should be. As a complete layman I find it difficult to specify what kind of music I expected from him. Most of the time he made the good music immediately."

Else van Laere - Home Made Productions

Are you looking for a music composer for your movie? Whether you are looking for a complete score or would like me to write a song to contribute to the soundtrack, you've come to the right place!

There is so much a good soundtrack can do for a movie. Done right, music can help a film make a lasting impression. A sad violin tune underscoring a tragic turn of events, a dark theme for the villain or suspenseful strings to stress impending danger. Alternated by silence when music would be out of place. A soundtrack that helps make your story an experience to remember. Using custom sound design and recordings of viola and guitar to make sure your story will stand out from the crowd.

Experience has taught me that this is best achieved by working together from the start, instead of only asking your input when the score is already finished. As a composer, it gives me a better understanding of what you'd like your audience to feel, and what they need to feel at specific moments. Because let's face it, who knows better what story you want your film to tell then you?

Though I have created music for many genres I specialize in writing music for horror, thriller and fantasy movies. I like to use ambient and surreal sound effects when writing a soundtrack. Examples include a reversed piano note, people screaming with distortion or tuned down hammer strikes. If you're interested in knowing more about this you can watch the video, in which I explain a bit about how I turn everyday sounds into ambient effects. Using effects like these works especially well for genres like horror, thriller, fantasy and darker action movies, and really make them into something special.

Finally, I frequently get asked what my rates are for scoring a movie. To be honest, it is very hard to give an exact rate I charge for movie scoring simply because, as every composer will agree, no two films are the same. To give an indication, a film like Webbed, which lasts about twenty minutes and needed music for almost the entirety of the movie was done for €200,-. To get a more precise indication for your movie, please get in touch with me.

Looking for music that is already finished and ready to be used in your project? I'm also a composer at Audiojungle, through which you can license some pieces of music for your project royalty free. My Audiojungle portfolio is dedicated to horror and thriller music. So it's worth a look if you want ready made music for your horror or thriller movie or game, though in all honesty I always advice to work with a composer to create custom music. Session Musician

"Marc was great to work with! Gave him very little instructions of what I wanted and he was able to deliver me the right emotions for the track and in great time! Looking forward to working with him in the future!"

Devesh Sodha

"Working with Marc has been wonderful. Quickly, he got the idea that we wanted and brought our song to a new level. I have no doubt that he will go far in his career because of the talent he possesses. We hope to work on future songs with him"
KB

"Marc is amazing. Not only as a musician but also as a person. He is one of those precious few who actually give a damn - about the song, the sound and music in general - and will go the extra mile to make sure the final result is as good as possible."

Zhivko Koev - Pagliacci

"Marc's beautiful viola playing added a wonderful extra dimension to my project "Fall Of An Empire". It was a real pleasure to work with him."

Leonard "L-Train" Hume

So you'd like me to record some viola melodies for your next record? The viola is the big brother of the violin. Its sound is a bit darker and more melancholic, which makes it perfect for darker types of music. It is also tuned a bit lower, comparable to having the six lowest strings of a seven string guitar.

I can play and record what you send me, or you can ask me to come up with my own melodies for a song, so whether you have the sheet music worked out, a vague idea of what you want or just know you need some viola for you're song, I'll make it happen!

Though I am a classically trained viola player I come from a musical background of mostly rock, metal and cinematic music. Over the years I've been a part of several bands in these and other genres, which means I know my way around most styles. I've also done numerous covers and collaborations as a violist, which means I have got a lot of experience in recording.

The video gives a quick idea how my viola and my playing sounds. To get a truly extensive idea of my playing please have a look at my Youtube page, where all music I have recorded on viola is readily available.

My rate is €80,- for a single song, which includes all necessary rewrites for you to be happy about the viola part. This can be lower or higher depending o This is however only due after finishing the recording, and only if you're happy with the recording. I won't ask you to pay for something you're not completely happy with! If you'd like me to do multiple songs we can discuss a discount, please contact me for this. I'm also available for live session work, as requirements for these vary widely, please contact me for those as well.

I also work together with a number of recording studios and mixing/mastering engineers. If you hire me as a session viola player and have them mix your tracks, they'll add the viola tracks to the mix for free. They will indicate if they work together with me themselves, if you'd like to find a suitable studio for you from the ones I work with, please contact me.

Contact info can be found at the bottom of the page.

For examples of my viola playing, please visit my Youtube page.

About me

The Beginning

There was a time when I thought that music just wasn't for me. I've even been told that as a kid, I once asked what the point of radio was after television was invented. This was because, as a kid, I didn't realize I liked the movies and games I liked so much in great part due to the music. These soundtracks did exactly what they were supposed to do, enhance the story while remaining in the background. The problem was not that I didn't like music, the problem was that my kind of music mostly hides in plain sight.

It is the same bombastic and dark moods that you'll hear in soundtracks that eventually got me into rock and metal. Such a different style than the music on the radio, hearing it and learning about it made me finally feel at home, and realize that the music I liked was just a little bit harder to find. It became such a big part of my life so quickly that it didn't take long for me to decide to pick up an instrument and learn how to play.

The Influences

I decided to pick up playing guitar to be able to write music as well. It turned out to be a great way to quickly get introduced to all kinds of music I liked. Despite liking a lot of styles of music and learning to play a wide range of genres, I never really found a style I liked as much as hard rock and metal, simply because it seemed that the dramatic and bombastic moods were absent in all other styles of music. Though I always hoped to find another style I loved as much.

It took years before I became truly aware of another genre of music that had that bombast, darkness and diversity I loved about metal so much, which I found in Soundtracks and film music. Soundtracks are all around us, but most people don't realize it because of the way it is presented: background music to other stories. There is of course nothing wrong with that, it is again what soundtracks should do, but it is the reason it took so long to find it though I had been listenening to it for as long as I can remember. It was through the score for Inception by Hans Zimmer that I began to realize you can just listen to soundtracks in the same way as to other music, and that a lot of people were already doing just that.

Through this kind of music I began to really love string instruments, and started thinking about learning to play the violin for myself. I was however very much in doubt because I was already seventeen at the time, and doubted whether I could still become any good at it. I finally decided to do it anyway, hoping my background in guitar would give me an advantage (which, it turns out, doesn't) . In retrospect, I'm very happy I decided to go ahead and do it despite my being older. It turned out to be really rewarding and vital to truly understanding music with string instruments and enjoying it even more.

About a year into my violin lessons I tried out viola and almost instantly decided to make the switch. I prefer the bigger and darker tone of the viola to that of the violin and it comined really well with the music I like to make. I never understood why so little amount of players switch to viola besides the prejudice that only bad violin players become violists.

The Conservatory

Finishing high school, everyone has to decided which way to go in life. As it was very clear that music was (and still is) the most important thing in my life, I decided to really dedicate myself to learning to compose music and enrolled in the Royal Conservatory of the Hague. While I really enjoyed my time there and considered both the teachers and the students to be highly skilled composers and players, the Conservatory is too narrowly focused on avant-garde music for my taste, and at times a bit too dismissive of other musical styles and influences.

Recording Session

I really like the idea of incorporating all things you like in music into one style rather than choosing one thing over the other. This is exactly what I like both about film music and metal. Both extremely open-minded genres that lend a lot of colors and ideas from other styles while still remaining true to itself. Metal and film music even seem to converge more and more in the ever growing scene of symphonic metal, there being bands already calling themselves cinematic metal like Dark Sarah.

The Music

Which brings us to the music I make, which is heavily inspired by this tradition of incorporating all different styles of music I like into one. It's hard to name every style that has influenced me over the years, because I find new music I like everyday, and almost always feel the need to add whatever things I like about it to my current writing style. This makes writing film music so interesting, as it allows me to focus on very specific influences and really get into them if a film requires this or that specific style. My favourite music to this day remaining both darker styles of film music and metal.
